The Ross Township, Pennsylvania, Police K-9 Unit began in August 1995 with funding provided by a grant from the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office Drug Forfeiture Fund and donations from Burton's Total Pet and a few citizens. Two German Shepherd dogs, a breed with intelligence, strength and loyalty, were selected and imported to train as police service dogs, Enno from the Czech Republic and Sari from Slovakia. Each dog underwent extensive training with its handler. Officer James Fitch was teamed with K-9 Sari. Sari lived and worked with Officer Fitch. The training was conducted by a Master Trainer with the North American Police Work Dog Association. The team was dual certified in Patrol work and Narcotics Detection. A strong bond developed between handler and dog. Dr. James Beebe, owner of Northview Veterinary Hospital System, provided all medical care for the dogs.
The K-9 team was on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week and operated throughout the township. The team was available to assist other agencies and did so often within the southwest Pennsylvania region.
The police work dog team was able to:
K-9 Sari retired in June 2003 after working for 7 years and 10 months and enjoyed the final months of his life at home with his handler and family, which included a female German Shepherd dog and two Maine Coon cats. He died on July 26, 2004 from Degenerative Myelopathy. His spinal cord degenerated from the tail forward and finally paralyzed him.
Sari was a remarkable dog and is greatly missed by his handler. Sari was the best partner he ever had in his law enforcement career. Persons fluent in the Slovak language have said that Sari is a nickname for Sarik, which means a wonder dog or super dog who does many things very well. That so very well described Sari!
This site is dedicated to the memory of K-9 Sari.
